Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United are focused on trying to win the Europa League after crashing out of the FA Cup fifth round against Fulham on penalties.

Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham on the stroke of half-time, but Fernandes equalised in the 71st minute with a brilliant left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

There was nothing between the two sides after 90 minutes and extra-time was required. United look exhausted and chances were at a premium, so it was no surprise to see the game head to penalties.

Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Casemiro scored United's first three penalties. However, Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee had their efforts saved by Bernd Leno and Fulham won the shootout.

"I think we controlled the game," Fernandes told MUTV after full-time. "In one moment in the first half, we conceded a goal that we talked about during the week, that they do that from set-pieces. We should have been more aware of that, but I think we controlled the game in the first half very well.

"We had some chances in the second half even more and in extra-time, I think Fulham had better control but we had the better chances to end up scoring a goal but we didn't and their penalties were more efficient than ours.

"I helped the team to draw the game and try get back into the game to win it, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough, but we now look forward until the rest of the season and the main focus is on the next match, in a competition we want to go forward in and it's our goal to try get a trophy."

Fernandes was asked about the team spirit and said: "I think it's always been there, but you get goals or you don't. It wasn't enough to get win against Everton and against Ipswich it was.

"Today, it was enough to get us to extra-time and penalties but, like I said, they were more efficient than us and unluckily for us, it's a dream that getting to Wembley again isn't there any more.

"We know we had many injuries in this period and we don't have many players. We've almost been playing with the same players for long spells and it's been difficult, so we now need to recover and focus, so we can do the best we can and have fresh legs in the next game.

"It's going to be a tough one, a Spanish team that plays good football. They have very good players up front, good quality coming out from the back, so we need to be fresh to run with them."

United's only hope of winning a trophy this season is the Europa League and they will face Real Sociedad in the first leg of the competition's round of 16 on Thursday evening.

Real Sociedad are ninth in La Liga and lost 4-0 against Barcelona on Sunday afternoon.
